CHoC (Cumbria Health on Call) is a not for profit, Social Enterprise serving patients across Cumbria. In April 2017 CHoC was awarded the rating of ‘Outstanding’ by the CQC and were also awarded the NHS70 Parliamentary Award for Excellence in Primary Care.

CHoC provides primary health care services to a population of over 500,000 residents; but with approximately 40 million visitors per year the population can rise to well over excess of this. CHoC also provide extended access services across Cumbria, offering pre-bookable appointments to assist GP practice capacity.

The CHoC clinical team is comprised of GPs, advanced nurse practitioners, treatment centre nurses, telephone triage nurses, pharmacists and HCA’s who cover the county. Operating from 14 clinical sites across Cumbria, some of which are co-located next to A&E Departments and various primary care facilities within community hospitals. The service also utilises twelve fully equipped 4x4 vehicles on the road to meet the challenges of providing care to a diverse geography.

CHoC have been trail-blazing the implementation of telemedicine across the local health system at scale working with local hospital Trusts across several clinical specialities including but not limited to oncology, mental health, school nursing and paediatric nephrology.  This follows on from several innovative schemes operating within the out of hours period, connecting patients in hard to reach areas to remote clinicians via video resulting in faster response time, improved patient experience, improved outcomes and greater efficiency.  CHoC have also worked with a national charity for ex-serviceman - the Firefighters Charity providing primary mental health support and physio consultations both pre and post-rehab.

CHoC place a strong emphasis on supporting the wellbeing and development of its workforce, providing high quality training for both its clinical and non-clinical staff so they can continue to develop their skills whilst continuing to provide a high quality and patient focused service.
